In the Arizona heat, you aren’t just your brother’s keeper: you’re their safety net.
When the mercury hits triple digits on a job site or in a back-of-house kitchen, heat illness doesn’t always show up with a warning. It creeps.
This is why the Buddy System is a non-negotiable tool for the trades and restaurants.
Crew leads: assign buddies every shift. Implement a “See Something, Say Something” protocol. If your partner looks off, pull them out.
Watch for these red flags:
– Confusion or slurred speech (Major red flag!)
– Dizziness or fainting
– Heavy sweating (Or if they stop sweating entirely)
– Nausea or headache
– Extreme irritability
“Toughing it out” isn’t a badge of honor; it’s a costly liability. One heat stroke on your watch turns into an OSHA nightmare faster than you can find a shaded spot.

Make sure your heat safety plan is more than just a bucket of water and a “good luck.”
